In a timespan between the 17th to the 19th century, there was no ‘dentist’ and nothing like ‘dentistry’ actually. There was no treatment for a dental infection. Then many big changes and advancements took place in a time when our grandparents were kids and those changes created a base for today’s astonishing dentistry. For example, nobody liked dental problems and nobody likes them today too, nobody liked going to a surgeon and many still do not like to go.

The Dentistry of 17th Century – 18th century

  • People used to play a drum near the patient for distracting them. The drum used to get louder as extraction came closer.
  • For advertising themselves being the tooth-pullers, barber surgeons were then used hanging a large rows of rotten teeth on the entrance of their shops.
  • It was a time when only a few things—or it will be better to say ‘nearly nothing’—was known about how body worked.
  • A barber surgeon used to be the dentist of that time. When people found themselves suffering from severe toothache, they used to go to a local barber surgeon. The surgeon then used to extract the rotten tooth away from the mouth.
  • Often it also involved tying a string around the tooth.

  • Penicillin discovery gave a new height to dentistry.
  • In this century, people realized that the profession of dentist is a safe career choice.
